MET GALA 2019
So this year’s Met Gala theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and for those not familiar with Camp it’s basically over-the-top/exaggerated fashion— think Drag. As per usual, most of the attendees DID NOT nail the theme and opted for safe looks but I want to give a standing, stank-face, slow clap for the ones who brought all the campfire FLAMES. I live for the fashion on the Met red carpet so it’s really hard for me not to type this whole post in CAPS. OK, here’s my roundup of the top ten best looks at the 2019 Met Gala, in no particular order (but if we were giving awards I would have to hand it to Cardi).
CARDI B: Bloody shoes, bloody dress, bloody headpiece— Mama Bardi served dreamy queen of hearts vibes in this custom Thom Browne work-of-art. I am obsessed with this train and the depth built into this dress, the feathers, beading, and overall celebration of a woman’s body. My jaw is still on this floor, serve Cardi— SERVE!
LUPITA NYONG’O: For me Lupita nailed the theme perfectly, she really brought to life the fun and whimsical nature that is Camp. The colors, the makeup, and those gold afro picks nestled so beautifully in her natural textured hair— I LIVE!!
JANELLE MONÀE: Ms. Monàe always brings perfection to the Met red carpet and this year’s look did not disappoint. I loved the lines and the intersection between masculine and feminine.
NAOMI CAMPBELL: Muva campbell can do no wrong in my book. I love this color on her and that lacy leg and higher-than-high split is everything. Push through Queen!!
BILLY PORTER: Let me just say that Billy Porter arriving to the red carpet on the shoulders of six men is a whole VIBE! I was just recovering from the perfection of his Oscars look and now this look is just too much slayage—Let us breathe, Billy. GASP.
GEMMA CHAN: Yass girl! This headpiece is glorious and she just drips elegance. I’m such a fan of her in Crazy Rich Asians and she definitely brought the drama with this look.
KYLIE & KENDALL JENNER: I love how their bright orange and lavender feathered looks complement one another. Feathers were definitely a recurring theme on the red carpet and I think they both killed it.
RYAN MURPHY: It was so refreshing to see Ryan Murphy step outside of the stereotypical black that so many of the men of the Met red carpet don year over year and try to call fashion, but his look gave me all the Liberace vibes.
CARA DELEVINGNE: Last but definitely not least, Ms. Delevingne (I have no idea how to pronounce her last name lol). I loved how fun her look was. She looked like she stepped out of a Tim Burton adaptation of CandyLand, and I am here for all of it.
